A Sunset
JASON YATES GRAPHIC DESIGNER UMKC HEALTH SCIENCES CAMPUS
You asked me for a sunset From that California beach The smallest gesture will suffice If your dreams are out of reach “The ocean seems to call me” You declare it on repeat You’ll never be quite settled ‘Til the sand has touched your feet That majestic western sky Unveiled a golden masterpiece In real time we were witness As the sun laid down to sleep “Thanks for understanding” Your tone was so sincere Perhaps your favorite moments Were the ones we captured here As we returned to our hotel There was a stillness to your soul You were grateful for a gift That your hands would never hold
The One We Lost
Silver ring upon her finger With five stones set in the band One each for me and my brother One for mom and one for dad That last stone bears a sadness Like untimely Autumn frost For that despairing sapphire Is for the one we lost I was just a little boy And barely I remember What could only become known As a hard day in September My uncle was an EMT I’m told he saw this baby boy It was a moment doused in sorrow When it should have led to joy I must have overlooked All the sadness in the air Just a quiet sort of mourning For the child that wasn’t there Every now and then I wonder what might have been A little brother, tag along A playmate and a friend For mom there’s still a place At the table of her heart for a child of undrawn breath And a life denied a start
